Mustang Sally? No, I don't think so. Yes, I understand you are on vacation here in San Francisco lady. No, 5 bucks in the tip jar will not do it. How about something a bit more interesting? What do you mean "do we know any Johnny Lang?!!"
...the glockenspeel at a bar mitzvah. In all honesty, in previous years I would have aggreed with Lee Thompson about M Sally, but I haven't played it in so long it might be a change. Maybe "Just a Little Bit". It's on every set list I have ever owned and I still play it just about every gig.....
I think that as a performing musician, it should be about what your audience wants to hear, rather than what you want to play
I've have had that discussion numerous times with just about every band member I've ever played with and it is a very poignant issue. It's off topic so I won't go too deep, but it all comes down to the big question "Why I Play the Blues".
As a performing musician you do have to please your audience. However, I have learned in my short time as a "student of the blues". It is also important to educate your audience and dig a bit deeper than the standard "Three drunks, and a harp" school of thought.
Most folks in a San Francisco blues club are familiar with a very small slice of the musical archive of the blues. Hell, ten years ago I was also guilty of this. I have had the benefit of playing with some serious blues history majors. The boys in One More Mile jump to mind, as well as J.C. Smith, and others.
Now I just do my small part to keep the blues alive. If that means Mustang Sally twice a night...so be it. (Just send the barmaid over to the drum riser again...)
