Music evolves, whether you like it, or not; an over-rehearsed band's first time onstage can be quite a trial, when the music decides to go THAT way, and the band fights it.
To me it's pretty simple. A good guitar player will figure out a way to sound good with or without pedals or effects. But tone choices are part of a personal style, and I just don't agree with anyone who thinks there's only one "real" blues tone.

For altogether too many bassists, "solo", means, "as many notes as you can play in that whackety-bang-bang, thumb-and-pop, style", which, I suppose, is good for impressing peers in music stores, but little else, IMHO.

I think that pedals and blazing notes may have an effect sometimes. but not always. If you listen to SRV, for instance, you find a very essential component of Blues: dynamics. All great blues players have that. And one reason the tweed Fender amps...

Why do guitarists do this? A bassist gets cranky...
As a bassist, I hear this all the time: a nice, slow blues, and guitar players who use this as a platform to play as many notes, as fast as they possibly can. As a friend said, "Music is not the Olympics." I say, music is as much about the space, as the notes.
I also don't get why a BLUES session necessitates lugging a pedal board; this leads to the kind of effects-laden sound, where I have no idea what a player really sounds like--maybe he/she doesn't either! If you can't get "your sound" with… Continue
