Interview with Mick Martin
Introduction
MICK MARTIN
Mick Martin has played blues harmonica professionally since 1968 and, since 1983, led "Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers." On March 31, 1994, Mick did something highly unusual for a harmonica player: he performed at Carnegie Hall for the nationally-broadcast "Blues in Jazz" concert with mentor Jimmy Smith, Jimmy Witherspoon, Gr…

Hi all,
Just wanted to let those of you that know me that my band, T-Wrex and the Primitive Rhythm, is playing at Maggie McGarry's in San Francisco this Sunday night, from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am. I did post this in the events, but wanted to direct special attention to it, because this is my first regular North Beach gig opportunity and having as many people there would help out. No cover, and cheap drinks. Hope to see some of my friends there!

We auditioned a guitar player last night Oct 14th. It was one of the most fun auditions I have ever been a part of. The band sounds great and we had it all together even though some of the tunes were unknown to the man. Joel is going to be a lot of fun, a pleasure and an honour to work with just like it is with Mike, the drummer. I feel we can make an impact in this county in the Blues scene. My idea is to be a host band at a Blues jam. I think we might be able to take it a little further.

How many bands have I played with this year? An unofficial count comes out to 23. Twenty-Three different bands just this calendar year! A lot were one-offs, sub gigs that I did one or two shows. Some were put together for a specific show. A couple were bands I was, or am, a ‘member’ of, but actually joining a band is a rarer thing for me.
Twenty three. It’s a good number. Twenty Four, on the other hand, is a great number. Willie Mays wore 24. Twenty Four has a lot of symmetry to it. Two dozen.…

As you probably know, I am something of a “Freelance” musician. This means I do a lot of subbing for other bass players, and various other fill-in gigs for bands that need a bassist short term.
While there is nothing like being in a band that you’re proud of, that works a lot, and satisfies your artistic wishes, playing with a bunch of different people, playing a bunch of different kinds of music keeps everything fresh and exciting.
One reason I get so many of these gigs is that I have a reput…

Hi,
My name is Mike and I am the guitarist / singer for a new original blues-rock trio called Gemini Six. I am originally from the East Coast and am not familiar with the local scene. Can someone suggest venues that my band can solicit gigs? You can hear our tunes posted on my page.
Thanks,
Mike Connelly

Howdy friends,
Fresh off our fun appearance on KRSH with Linda Seabright, The Brothers Goldman return to Armando's for another Thursday night of funk, jazz, R&B, and whatever else comes flying by. The Brothers Goldman don't play a lot, but for me it's an opportunity to really stretch out and play some bass!
Armando's is a gem of a club, a place where musicians can play and feel like musicians, NOT feel like Beer Salesmen. If you haven't been, you should go.
Armando's is located at;
707 Ma…

We’ve discussed this before; I am not a Luddite, but I do exist somewhere between “New Media Savvy” and “Old Guy with Flashing VCR Clock.” The fact that I even use the ‘flashing VCR clock’ to describe myself in any way is a tip-off as to which end of the spectrum I favor. What this all means is, as a ‘Working Musician’, I’ve got to try to keep up with the technology enough to use it to my benefit.
First I got my own website;

The New Fendermen have been playing at various venues all over the Bay Area. Some that are private functions and some that various nite spots. In my many years of my playing at venues where I have played with a few bands where we were opening bands for well known recording artiists, I have often wondered what does these night spots look for in a band that is going to play at their establishment.
So my question is to you all " What is it that the various venues in the San Francisco Bay Area look…

Hey everybody,
I just posted four new tunes to The Very Bad Boys site. These were recorded live at Armando's in Martinez, one of the East Bay's hottest venues. But don't take my word for it -- ask the mighty Kennan Shaw. Enjoy!

One of the most entertaining, ongoing and endless debates available on the Internets today is not about health care reform, financial meltdowns and bailouts, Michael Jackson's doctor, or even Kate and Jon's divorce (and I know they're getting divorced, even though I don't have the first clue who they are or what they do - such is the power of media today). No, for my money, the most controversial subject on the Internets today is this one: just what, exactly, is the blues?
On various blues disc…

Check out Larry McCray at Biscuits and Blues in the city on Friday night August 14th. Larry is a great guitar player with a powerful voice and doesn't get to the west coast very often. If you haven't been to Biscuits and Blues, it's a nice venue and they do a 8PM dinner show and a 10 PM late show. You can check out Larry's music at www.larrymccrayband.com.

As I’ve probably mentioned a time or two, I’ve had the good fortune of knowing and playing with a lot of really good musicians. As a bassist, it’s usually drummers who stand out, because a great drummer is like Magic Johnson; he makes everyone around him better.
However, when I think about the musicians I most enjoyed working with, and who could amaze me the most, it’s a handful of singers that leap to mind. A really, really good singer has the ability to hold a crowd, and has the gift of infus…
