Why do guitarists do this? A bassist gets cranky...

As a bassist, I hear this all the time: a nice, slow blues, and guitar players who use this as a platform to play as many notes, as fast as they possibly can. As a friend said, "Music is not the Olympics." I say, music is as much about the space, as the notes. I also don't get why a BLUES session necessitates lugging a pedal board; this leads to the kind of effects-laden sound, where I have no idea what a player really sounds like--maybe he/she doesn't either!
